Pools & landscapes for Hill Country estate communities Designed for the community around you.

The Hill Country’s gated and golf communities have their own settings, sites and rules. Here is what to know about designing and building in each of them.

Cordillera Ranch

A gated Hill Country community in the Boerne area, with a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course and land running toward the Guadalupe River. Homes here sit on large lots with long views, which suit vanishing edge pools, terraces and complete landscapes. Cordillera Ranch has a mandatory property owners association, so plan for its requirements from the start of design.

Tapatio Springs

A resort and golf community in Kendall County, set around the Tapatio Springs golf course. Golf course lots raise questions of their own: how to frame the view, and how much privacy to keep from the fairway. Our portfolio shows both approaches on golf course lots: a pool enclosed for privacy and a natural-style pool that looks out over the course.

Fair Oaks Ranch

A city of its own along I-10 between San Antonio and Boerne, reaching into Bexar, Kendall and Comal counties. It was built around ranch land and golf, and it still has plenty of mature oaks. Because the city spans three counties, it is worth confirming which rules apply to your address. Protecting existing trees is usually a big part of any design here.

The Canyons at Scenic Loop

A private, gated community of custom homes in northwest San Antonio, off Scenic Loop Road, with homesites of roughly half an acre to an acre and a half. Lots this size in canyon country reward careful planning: a modest footprint, steep grades and a lot to fit in. A master plan makes the most of the space.

George’s Ranch

A gated, master-planned community of about 1,140 acres in Boerne, on the historic ranch of George Wilkins Kendall, with homesites of around an acre. Many homes here are new, which makes this the right moment to plan the outdoor spaces. If you are building, talk to us before final grading and before sod and fencing go in. Equipment access and drainage are much easier to plan at this stage.

Boot Ranch

A private club community of about 2,000 acres just north of Fredericksburg, with a Hal Sutton golf course and a limited number of residences. Private club communities like this typically have design review for exterior work, so allow for it in your schedule. Stone, shade and planting that suits the surrounding Hill Country will look at home here.

Planning ahead in a private community

Estate communities add a step that most other projects don’t have: approval. Owners associations and architectural review committees often look at exterior work, and they can have rules on setbacks, materials, fencing, lighting and hours of construction. Allow time for that, and read your community’s guidelines before you commit to a design.

Access is the other thing to think about. Golf course and canyon lots can be tight, with limited room for equipment and materials. These are normal parts of building at this level, and they are much easier to deal with early.

Common questions

01

Do you work in gated communities?

Yes. Tell us which community your home is in, and we will review its requirements with you before design begins.

02

Does my community need to approve a pool?

Many owners associations require review of exterior work, including pools and structures. Requirements differ from one community to the next, so it is best to check before design decisions are made.

03

When should I talk to you if I am building a new home?

As early as you can, ideally before final grading. It is much easier to plan a pool, drainage and equipment access before the landscaping and fencing go in.
