Daytime view of the stone pool wall, stair and pergola beside the house

Hardscape & retaining walls · Texas Hill Country Stone, structure and the slope beneath it.

On a Hill Country lot, the walls and terraces are what make everything else possible. We engineer them, then build them with our own crews.

Retaining walls that do real work

A retaining wall holds back soil and water, and on a steep site it may also be carrying a terrace, a pool or a structure above it. It has to be designed for what is behind it and what sits on top of it, with a plan for the water that collects behind the wall. Structural engineering and site work are part of our scope for that reason. On the hydrotherapy spa project, substantial retaining walls are what made a level outdoor living area possible at all.

One client came to us facing what they called formidable engineering and architectural limitations, and chose us after interviewing a number of contractors. Sites like that are where engineering and design under one roof pay off.

Terraces and stairs

Terraces turn a slope into rooms you can use. Stairs connect those rooms, and they deserve the same care as anything else on the property. Our work includes flagstone staircases down a hillside, used Chicago brick stairs, steps with custom Mexican tile risers, and raised planters woven into the staircase.

Comfortable steps matter for everyone who will use them over the years. We pay attention to easy rise and run, sturdy handrails where they are needed, and lighting on every step so the path down to the pool is as safe at night as it is by day.

Choosing materials

The best hardscape feels as if it came from the same place as the house. We have detailed a formal pool in cut Lueders stone, built stairs and coping in used Chicago brick, scored terraces with a rock-salt finish, set cast-in-place pavers into synthetic turf, and used moss rock for walls around sunken seating.

Drainage comes with the job

Hardscape changes where water goes. Every terrace, wall and walkway is one more surface shedding rain, and on a Hill Country slope that water moves fast. Grading and drainage are designed along with the hardscape rather than added afterward.

Common questions

01

What is hardscape?

Hardscape is the built, non-planted part of a landscape: retaining walls, terraces, patios, stairs, walkways, seat walls and paving. On a sloped Hill Country site, it is usually what creates the usable outdoor space.

02

Do retaining walls need to be engineered?

Tall walls, and walls that carry a pool, terrace or structure above them, should be designed by an engineer. Structural engineering is part of our design/build scope, and we assess every wall on the project in the context of what it has to hold.

03

Can you build hardscape without a pool?

Yes. Terraces, retaining walls, stairs and courtyards can be a project on their own.
